do we need to hike the trail in order to see the view? or we can see the view at the parking lot? someone said when you walk to the end of the trail to the viewpoint, can see the green river, so besides the green river, is there any difference between viewing at the parking lot and viewing at the viewpoint (after walking the trail)? as we are with young kids, so wonder is it worthy to hike the trail, if the view seeing at the parking lot is similar to that at the viewpoint (after walking the trail) except for the green river view, I may save some time and energy to go to more places and see more things in the park. Thanks

I know that this answer is very late. We are, after all, traveling. But for future reference, you do not need to walk the trail. If I had a little one in tow, I probably wouldn't. There are several really nice views in the first 100 ft. There are many steps to get down the first 50 ft., so that might now be practical either. The viewpoint at the end of the trail would be nearly impossible with small children. Please don't attempt this. I don't believe that you can see the Green River at all - it is mostly the vista which is impressive. So, stay at the turn-out and enjoy. It is well situated to see 90% of the view.
I see the pictures that posted here with the flat top and a deep "S" shape valley is fantastic, so we can see such view just at the overlook or need to hike the trail in order to see it? thanks.

You only need to go to the Overlook. If you want to hike it then that's a bonus.
