One of the best gardens I have seen in Japan. We went in May and expected to see more spring flowers than we did. They were a little early this year. Some Irises were out. But the spring growth on …Full review by ZN9999

I highly recommend the visit to the villa. We went on an English-speaking tour (the only way available), which was rather intimate - only 12 people at the entire villa, huge contrast to all the other…Full review by Katya T
Two of us will be arriving by ship to Kobe at 10:00 a.m. on August 16. We want to take a train to Kyoto and hopefully visit these exquisite gardens. Hopefully we are not too late in asking, but will you allow 2 more people in that day?

I visited in late March, a time when cherry blossoms were beginning, something the Katsura Villa is not known for. The English language tour at 1 pm was not full, so I could have simply shown up. As it was, my application to to join the tour was accepted via the website the day after I submitted it. Summer might be busier, but if you haven't applied (or have applied and been turned down) there is no harm in showing up. The Villa is reasonably easy to get to, about a 15 minute walk from the rail station. It helps to have a street map; the walking route is not complicated, but you can make a wrong turn at the main traffic light.
Has anyone had the experience of successfully queueing for tickets on the day? If so, any tips on how early one should go (I think the counter opens at 8.40 but I assume people turn up earlier than that) and what kind of size of crowd one could expect?
