A proposed bill in Mississippi proposes certifying bounty hunters to support the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown on a local level.

A Mississippi lawmaker has introduced legislation which if passed would set up a bounty hunting program targeting undocumented migrants. Republican State Rep. Justin Keen from DeSoto County proposed the bill that would create the “Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program” which is aimed at “accelerating deportation efforts in line with the Trump Administration’s immigration priorities.

The proposed “Mississippi Illegal Alien Certified Bounty Hunter Program Fund” shows how hard-line immigration policies at the federal level have influenced policy proposals in states and localities.

A confrontational legislative hearing Monday — with a witness calling a state senator a fascist and lawmakers battling over whether the state should put a bounty on undocumented immigrants — set the tone for this year’s debate on immigration and the state’s role in border security.

Under the bill, the Missouri Department of Public Safety would create a system for anyone to contact authorities and accuse someone of being here without legal documentation. But accusers can remain anonymous,
