Protesters in New York gathered at separate demonstrations in Manhattan and Albany on Monday, holding up signs reading “Black Lives Matter” and “Justice for Robert Brooks” days after a disturbing video of the Black inmate’s fatal beating at the hands of correctional officers was released.

Letitia James, the attorney general, said a special prosecutor would lead an investigation into the deadly attack on Robert Brooks because her office had a possible conflict of interest.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has ordered more than a dozen prison staffers to be fired over the fatal beating of an inmate earlier this month.
