Oil gave up earlier gains due to China stimulus hopes and an industry report showing lower US inventories. US crude fell 0.7 per cent to $69.61 a barrel and Brent fell to $73.22 per barrel, down 0.49 per cent on the day.

On the final expiry day of the year, the domestic market stayed unchanged throughout the day, due to holidays in other markets and the absence of significant domestic or global catalysts.

Indian benchmark indices Nifty 50 and Sensex ended the previous trade session flat. Nifty 50 closed at 23,750.20, while Sensex ended at 78,472.48. Overnight, US markets remained choppy. Asian equities gained in early trade today.
