Congress averted a government shutdown Friday just hours before the funding deadline, after the Senate approved a House-passed spending bill that exposed deep rifts within the Democratic Party.

Democrats were split on the vote, with some wanting to use it as leverage to fight Department of Government Efficiency cuts.

Democratic leader Chuck Schumer voted alongside Republicans to advance a House GOP spending bill that would keep the government open for another six months, beyond the midnight shutdown deadline.
