New York has ordered a weeklong shutdown of all live bird markets in New York City, Westchester and Long Island after seven cases of avian flu were detected at bird markets in the city.

NEW YORK — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Friday that all live poultry markets in New York City and three suburban counties were being shut down after seven cases of avian flu were detected at markets in the city’s five boroughs.

Live poultry markets in New York City raced to sell off all their chickens and other fowl Friday after seven cases of avian flu were detected and state officials ordered markets in the metropolitan area to close for a week.

The order requires market owners to sell or otherwise remove all live birds and conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfection of their facilities—even if bird flu wasn't detected

The order came after birds infected with the bird flu virus were found during routine inspections of live bird markets in the New York City boroughs of the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens.

The order affects roughly 80 markets in New York City and in several nearby counties. New Jersey is also asking its live markets to voluntarily clean, disinfect and temporarily close.
