Unlike most shonen protagonists with tragic pasts, Death Note's Light Yagami had no reason to fall to the dark side, yet he did breaking the mold.

Since this is a one-shot, it might be difficult to adapt this Death Note sequel into a full television series though a movie might work in terms of bringing its short story to the screen.
