While the Switch 2’s hefty price tag may turn off some consumers, it’s a solid evolution of one of the world’s most popular consoles.

Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct delivered all the information we’ve (not so patiently) been waiting for, with the presentation finally revealing details about the price, release date, and the Joy-Cons’ new mouse functionality.

Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo's main competitors, both manufacture video game consoles that offer cutting-edge graphics and performance at a higher price point. In contrast, Nintendo has historically chosen to keep its hardware simpler to remain at a more family-friendly price point.

Analyst and professor Joost van Dreunen, meanwhile, said the $450 price for the Switch 2 factored in higher manufacturing costs and uncertainty around tariffs, while Harding-Rolls said $450 makes sense given the Switch OLED currently sells for $350.

The Nintendo Switch 2 console's biggest reveal yet arrived Wednesday morning as part of the company's Nintendo Direct event. This teed up a day of Switch 2 reveals that include its June 5 release date, a $450 price, its specs, and its initial game lineup that extends from launch into 2026 .

The Mario-maker offered a sneak peek of its highly anticipated new console in January after a series of leaks, but the official detailed unveiling is set to take place Wednesday.

At that price, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be the most expensive console Nintendo has ever released, by some margin. And even adjusted for inflation, the Nintendo Switch 2 will be the most expensive Nintendo console in more than 30 years!

The $450 console will get Mario Kart World at launch, 4K gaming when docked, Switch 2 Edition game enhancements and new mouse controls.
