On the day that Louisiana’s first execution in 15 years is scheduled to take place, attorneys for the inmate are hoping for a last-minute court ruling to halt the death penalty from being carried out.

Before his execution, lawyers for Jessie Hoffman Jr., who was 18 when he was convicted of the 1996 murder of a 28-year-old woman, argued that the nitrogen gas execution infringed on his freedom to practice religion.

Despite more states shifting toward nitrogen hypoxia executions as lethal injection drugs become scarce, the high court remains divided over the legality of forcibly suffocating inmates.
