Pope Francis appointed Most Reverend Shawn McKnight to lead the archdiocese after Naumann’s mandatory retirement at the age of 75. According to church officials, McKnight will serve as the fifth archbishop and 12th bishop of the archdiocese.
The pope, in a previously unannounced move, came out to the square shortly before noon at the end of the celebration of a Mass for the Catholic Church’s Jubilee year.
