Freezing rain followed by powerful wind knocked down decades old trees that snapped like toothpicks under the weight of centimetres of rock solid ice. Roads disappeared under icy branches and power lines were completely torn from the poles.

Hundreds of thousands of people across Ontario were still without power Monday after freezing rain coated swaths of the province with thick layers of ice, with outages expected to last in some areas as storm cleanup continues.
