Orbital sanders are built with a hook and loop pad that uses removable sanding discs ... if the controls were awkward to access or if the handle was too small to get a solid grip.

The particular shape of the sanding pad on a palm sander also makes it handy ... Do note, though, that a palm sander isn't usually enough to handle a full-scale sanding job solely.
