Guatemalan authorities evacuated around 1,000 people Monday after Central America’s most active volcano erupted, spewing lava, ash and rocks. Residents with traumatic memories of a deadly eruption in 2018 sought refuge early Monday after Volcan de Fuego (Volcano of Fire) exploded spectacularly 35km (22 miles) from the capital Guatemala City.

Guatemala's Fuego volcano normally erupts once every four to five years. The last eruption occurred in June 2023. Over 1,000 people were evacuated at the time.
