A Washington man accused of impersonating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer near a Ukrainian grocery store has been charged.

FIFE, Wash. — A 26-year-old Washington resident was charged with criminal impersonation in Fife Municipal Court for allegedly impersonating an ICE agent. Ilya Kukhar currently faces a gross misdemeanor. Fife police told KING 5 they have been in contact with Homeland Security, but it's unclear if he will face federal charges.

A man was charged for posing as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Washington state, according to the Fife Police Department.

Washington state lawmakers are seeking greater oversight of private detention facilities like the ICE center in Tacoma, as immigrant rights groups report a sharp rise in the number of people detained there.

Union members gathered outside the Northwest ICE Processing Center to call for the release of two Washington residents who were detained this month.
