Researchers have established Australia's first motor neurone disease surveillance centre in a region where residents are three times more likely to contract the disease.

The charity initiative, which has already raised more than $100,000 for motor neurone disease, will occur in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Rakaia.
