CAPE TOWN, South Africa -- More than 100 firefighters battled two blazes on the slopes of South Africa's Table Mountain on Wednesday, and national parks authorities said they were starting to bring them under control after the fires threatened to move toward nearby Cape Town.

A fierce blaze hit Table Mountain National Park, affecting Newlands and Kirstenbosch. Helicopters and firefighters rushed to control the fire.

Firefighters have battled a blaze on the slopes in the national park for days. The fire spread overnight toward Cape Town’s central business district.
