"This extra time will deliver a smoother boarding experience for customers by allowing for pauses between boarding groups, relieving congestion on the jet bridge, and allowing customers to stow their bags and get settled before departure," American Airlines told Chron.

American Airlines said it plans to continue refining its boarding process to make the experience less stressful for passengers and employees alike.

The software sounds a chime if a passenger attempts to board a flight before their assigned group is called, alerting the gate agent and the customer.

American will start testing free inflight internet service on three routes next week. The carrier is under pressure to offer complimentary Wi-Fi as more airlines launch the service free of charge. American has been in the process of working to win back customers after a failed business travel sales strategy last year.

Starting this spring, the airline will increase boarding time in hopes of easing congestion, reducing last-minute baggage checks and enhancing the overall customer experience.
