RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- Suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann is scheduled to return to court Wednesday on Long Island. The 61-year-old is charged with the murders of seven women dating back to the 1990s .

Rex Heuermann’s attorney said in court Wednesday that the DNA technique used by a lab to allegedly link Heuermann to the Gilgo Beach serial killings is essentially “magic,” not science, and should be thrown out as evidence in the Long Island case.

The office argues nuclear DNA science is "generally accepted" within the scientific community and "based upon technology that has been implemented for decades."

Rex Heuermann, accused of multiple murders, contests DNA evidence in court, with his defense questioning the scientific acceptance of the forensic techniques used.

A judge on Wednesday scheduled hearings to hear arguments from lawyers who want accused Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann to receive five separate trials. Judge Timothy Mazzei will also hear from both sides to determine how much of the prosecution’s mountain of evidence against Heuermann will actually be admissible in court.

The suspect’s lawyer has also called for the case against his client, Rex Heuermann, to be split into five trials. On Wednesday, the judge agreed to hold hearings to consider both requests.
