Repeated earthquakes are rattling Greece’s volcanic island of Santorini. Scientists say the quakes aren't related to a slight increase in volcanic activity that has also been registered recently.

Hundreds of quakes have been registered in recent days in the Aegean Sea between Santorini and Amorgos, prompting authorities to shut schools and the islands of Ios, Amorgos and Anafi.

The Greek island of Santorini was struck by the latest in a string of earthquakes Tuesday, this time a 4.8 temblor. The government said it will backstop the island destination's tourist industry.

Scientists have detected several thousand earthquakes, the vast majority of them with small magnitudes, in just over two weeks near Greece’s volcanic island of Santorini.

The latest of hundreds of earthquakes have rattled the volcanic Greek island of Santorini after the strongest one so far with magnitude 5.3
