A free-diving spearfisherman was suddenly rendered helpless after an unnerving incident with a sea lion off San Diego.

NOAA officials are looking for a suspect seen using a black 8-inch knife to remove the deceased sea lion's head.

"Lifeguards determined that a free diver had been bitten by a marine mammal (sea lion or harbor seal)," the department says.
