The quiet, unassuming son of talented racer Lou Blaney, Dave had never seen a USAC Silver Crown car until March of 1983 when he travelled east to watch Gary Bettenhausen win a 100-mile race at the Nazareth National Motor Speedway in Pennsylvania.

Dave raced USAC Dirt Champ cars on one-mile tracks throughout the country including; DuQuoin, Springfield and Phoenix International. His success led to his win of the USAC Silver Crown Championship in 1984. Time spent in New York competing in various racing avenues proved to bring success to Dave where he raced for six years.
