Dec 6, 2010 · The only risk is that the "spark arrestor" could be considered a safety device and by removing it you are taking on some liability. Perhaps your local AHJ has a law against removing the screen. That would be silly since so many masonry chimneys have no such screen. You will have to make this decision.

Mar 21, 2018 · My chimney cap,the Supervent Delux Rain Cap, will be 11 feet above the roof. What I'm having a difficult time understanding is, he does not want me to install the fencing (spark arrestor) from inside the chimney cap as it is intended to be. Instead, he wants me to install it on the outside of the chimney cap.

Sep 29, 2014 · Got out the binoculars and checked the cap. Sure enough the spark arrestor was completely plugged. I think we had not done our annual cleaning at the time. The wire arrestor had about 5/8" mesh. I had to clean the flue and arrestor before we could have heat. I would worry about an arrestor if I could not remove it each year when I cleaned the flue.

Apr 12, 2010 · First year I started burning/heating with wood I promptly chucked the spark arrester cap and installed a plain rain cap. My chimney is 35' and is only accessible by ladder. Can't take a chance when stove is my only heat. Wind tore off one rain cap a few years ago and I just went without totally the rest of the season.

Mar 21, 2018 · An actual spark arrestor screen will help contain sparks in the event of a chimney fire and are required by regulations in some areas. But they are much smaller mesh and in most cases they do cause problems with clogging. The screen on most caps is not a spark arrestor just a screen to keep animals out.

Oct 17, 2012 · The light crunchy brown creosote. Flue was very clean, just the filter/screen/spark arrestor was packed with it, this was early in the season. This was a simpson brand cap and screen that uses the wire for a mesh. Entirely possible that our local wood species contribute.

Oct 29, 2020 · Called two chimney companies in our area and one said he couldn't do it and the other said we needed a handyman. The handyman we called said we needed a chimney guy. Figure I'll do it myself. The current plan is to remove the spark arrestor and have a cap fabricated. We'll know more once we get the spark arrestor off.
