Gungal forms part of the historic Hunter Valley of NSW and is located on the Golden Highway, mid-way between Denman and Merriwa. The area consists of farmland, bushland and spectacular sandstone ridge formations. A major aim of Gungal Community Group is to promote Gungal's natural and cultural assets.

Gungal is basically a farming area located in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Like many parts of Australia, its landscape is a mix of rugged natural beauty, open farmland and built heritage.

The Catholic Parish of Merriwa was officially established in 1874 and was originally a large area extending from Gungal to Uarbry. Because the parish was so large, the priest arranged with families living in country areas to celebrate Mass in their homes regularly.
