Steamboats played a major role in the 19th-century development of the Mississippi River and its tributaries, allowing practical large-scale transport of passengers and freight both up- and down-river. Using steam power, riverboats were developed during that time which could navigate in shallow waters as well as upriver against strong currents.

Aug 7, 2018 · One thing the thirty-year-old phenom responsible for Mickey Mouse wanted to do was to cruise down the Mississippi River on a paddlewheeler. He had lived as a boy on a farm not far from Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Missouri and the freedom of a riverboat—and it's destination, New Orleans—held a strong appeal.

Unlike the north-east of the USA where side-wheel paddle steamers prevailed, the rest of the country is associated with stern-wheelers. The mighty Mississippi River, running north to south through the centre of the continent, and its tributary the Ohio River were particular strongholds.

In the same year the paddle steamer, shown in the illustration, was invented and built in Philadelphia, Pa., by John Fitch, of Windsor, Conn. After many disappointments and misfortunes in applying steam to the propulsion of vessels, Mr. Fitch finally triumphed over repeated failures.
