In the last twenty years or so since I built this foot-powered treadle lathe, I have received many requests for drawings or plans. The lathe has been used as part of our traditional woodworking demonstrations and it never fails to draw a crowd.

Three lightweight parts comprise the moving components, the treadle itself, a Pittman link, and a spacer bar that keeps the treadle parallel to the center line of the lathe.

In most flywheel lathes of later periods, the foot treadle connects to a crank which in turn powers the flywheel's drive shaft. To simplify construction, Underhill's design connects the treadle arm directly to the face of the flywheel.

Mar 3, 2020 · So here is an easy-to-construct wood and steel alternative. As you can see - no bending! Using a drill press or really steady hands, drill two 1/2" holes 1-1/4" apart (or whatever crank length you want). The top rod is the one the flywheel is mounted on and the lower, short rod is where you mount the crank bearing.
