Jun 8, 2013 · Oakwood Cemetery was the final resting place of soldiers who died in treatment at Chimborazo Hospital, a massive facility on Church Hill, along with casualties from several battles fought in the Richmond area. By the end of the war, the Confederate section of the cemetery covered about 7.5 acres and contained around 17,000 burials.

Jun 13, 2012 · According to the service record for John Holdridge, drummer, he was wounded at Salem Church May 3, in Chimborazo Hospital May 6, 1863 for gun shot to hip, and returned to duty June 16, 1863. His service cards do not, however, include a muster roll for July 1863. There is an entry for Jan, Feb, March, April, Sept and Oct 1863.

Was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond and subsequently granted "sick furlough" where he returned to his home in Rockingham County, VA and died there of “ascites” in November 1864 with his widow receiving a pension in later years.

Jan 4, 2023 · Chimborazo was more of a general convalescent hospital, so I think there were actual buildings etc. Sheridan's Winchester hospital was a field hospital, so the patient housing was pretty much all tents. I think it served for Third Winchester, Cedar Creek, and other area engagements, but only existed from about Sept 1864 to January 1865. ARB

Jan 16, 2014 · He fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville & Gettysburg. He was shot in the left wrist and got captured at Gettysburg during Pickett's massacre. His arm was amputated in a federal field hospital without anesthesia. He was traded and spent a while in a Chimborazo (excuse spelling) hospital in Richmond. Discharged and sent home in 1864.
