Cub Scout activities are centered around earning badges that are specific to each school grade level. This badge represents a rank. Advancement refers to the progress a Cub Scout makes toward their badge of rank. All of the activities for each rank are in the Cub Scout handbooks.

On the advancement trail, a Cub Scout progresses towards a badge of rank based on their grade. They need not have earned the previous rank in order to earn the next. To earn each badge of rank a Cub Scout earns the six required Adventures and at least two elective Adventures.

In this article, I’ll be breaking down each Cub Scout rank so that you (or your child) are prepared to progress and have the best Cub Scouting experience possible.

Cub Scouts earn Adventures that are specific to their grade and rank. A number of Adventures must be completed to earn the badge of rank for each grade level. Completion of Adventures is how the aims of character, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness are developed. Select a specific rank to see the list of required and elective Adventures.

First Cub Rank Badges: Wolf, Bear, and Lion The first rank badges of Cubbing were made of felt with wide borders. The badges have "Cubs, BSA" embroidered on them. This is because the boys were referred to as Cubs in the early years, not Cub Scouts.

There are currently 6 ranks, each associated with a different Elementary grade year. There are 5 Required adventures for each year and 2 elective adventures. Elective adventures can be rank specific, for all ranks, restricted (range & target), or for multiple ranks.
