Occasionally, the displacement on the individual horses is more significant, such that each horse lies more or less vertically above the other; this is known as an antiformal stack or imbricate stack. If the individual displacements are still greater, the horses have a foreland dip.

Imbricate structures form by the stacking of two or more thrust sheets (Fig. 1) and are common in fold-and-thrust belts worldwide (Dahlstrom, 1969, 1970; Price, 1981; Boyer and Elliot, 1982; Suppe, 1983; McClay and Price, 1981).

A system of imbricate thrust faults that branch off from a floor thrust below and curve upward to join a roof thrust at a branch line is called a duplex. The fault-bound bodies of rock in the duplex are horses.
