Hike for 7.5 miles, ascending another 5,500 ft., to the Mauna Loa cabin on the rim of Mokuʻāweoweo at 13,265 ft. This section of the trail is considered challenging. Those unprepared for extreme conditions should not attempt it.

Mauna Loa Summit cabin is at 13,250 feet on the Cabin Trail at the edge of Moku'aweoweo Caldera, directly across from the actual summit. Halewai shelter is at 7,750 feet and is located in the Kapapala Forest Reserve, three miles from the trailhead of the Ainapo Trail.

Proceed cautiously on this 12.4-mile out-and-back trail near Honaunau, Hawaii. Generally considered a highly challenging route, it should only be attempted by experienced adventurers. This is a popular trail for backpacking and hiking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day.

The primary Mauna Loa Trail technically ends below the top of the mountain, where it splits into the Summit Trail (to the summit) and Cabin Trail (to Mauna Loa Cabin – shelter). Each of these shorter trails are slightly more than 2 miles, one-way.

During our four day backpacking trip to the cabins we saw gigantic cinder cones, saw an uncountable amount of lava tubes, and walked across modern lava flows.
