How to Measure Radiation and Radioactivity
Radiation dose rates in the environment can be thought of as ambient radiation levels. Ambient radiation levels are reported in gray per hour (Gy/h) or sievert per hour (Sv/h), which are the international units. In the United States, we use roentgen per hour (R/h) or rem per hour (rem/h).
Many individuals are exposed to additional radiation from medical diagnostics and procedures that can vary in dose by several orders of magnitude.
