David Samuel Peckinpah (/ ˈpɛkɪnˌpɑː /; [1] February 21, 1925 – December 28, 1984) was an American film director and screenwriter. His 1969 Western epic The Wild Bunch received two Academy Award nominations and was ranked No. 80 on the American Film Institute 's top 100 list.

Dec 28, 1984 · INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Sam Peckinpah, a rugged movie director of graphically violent films that included 'The Wild Bunch,' and 'Straw Dogs,' died Friday of a heart attack. He was 59.

At the end of his life he was considering a number of projects including the Stephen King -scripted "The Shotgunners". He was returning from Mexico in December 1984 when he died from heart failure in a hospital in Inglewood, California, at age 59.
