Learn about the rich botanical heritage of our neighbors in our Mexican Garden, which displays agaves, salvias, prehistoric cycads and festive topiary mariachis. Overlook the ocean from the hillside Old World Desert Garden, with showy aloes, euphorbias, and dragon trees.

We are proud to be a premier institution for botanical science and conservation, both within the Garden and beyond our 37 acres. Our major projects fall within three pillars: native plants , medicinal plants , and food and agricultural plants .

The American Bamboo Society, founded at San Diego Botanic Garden in 1979, was the inspiration to create our beautiful bamboo grove. As botanists, collectors and hobbyists united their common interests at the Garden, a large variety of bamboo was procured on behalf of our young botanic garden.
