1905 marks the centennial of St. James Catholic parish. Madison’s first Catholic church, St. Raphael’s, was erected in 1848, serving a congregation that was two-thirds Irish and one-third German and Austrian.

Saint James Catholic Church was founded in 1967. Three local families began the church in Barbara Engle and Ruth William’s Magic Land Kindergarten building located to the rear of what is now the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center on Main Street.

Good Shepherd Catholic Parish was formed in 2012 by the merger of the parishes of St. James Church at 1128 St. James Court in Madison, and St. Joseph Church at 1905 W. Beltline Highway in Madison, just outside of the Fitchburg city limits.
