Disulfide (sulfur-sulfur) linkages between two cysteine residues are an integral component of the three-dimensional structure of many proteins. The interconversion between thiols and disulfide groups is a redox reaction: the thiol is the reduced state, and the disulfide is the oxidized state.
Thiols and Sulfides - Chemistry LibreTexts
A thiol is a compound which contains an SH functional group. The -SH group itself is called a mercapto group. A disulfide is a compound containing an -S-S- linkage. (Organic) sulfides have the structure R-S-R′, and are therefore the sulfur analogues of ethers.
Organic sulfide - Wikipedia
General structure of a sulfide with the blue marked functional group. In organic chemistry, a sulfide (British English sulphide) or thioether is an organosulfur functional group with the connectivity R−S−R' as shown on right. Like many other sulfur-containing compounds, volatile sulfides have foul odors. [1]
18.7 Thiols and Sulfides - Organic Chemistry | OpenStax
Sulfides are the sulfur analogs of ethers just as thiols are the sulfur analogs of alcohols. Sulfides are named by following the same rules used for ethers, with sulfide used in place of ether for simple compounds and alkylthio used in place of alkoxy for more complex substances.

Lewis structure generator - Ideal Calculator: Collection of the best ...
To use the Lewis Structure Calculator follow these steps: Enter the formula of the molecule in the field provided for it. For example, if we want to obtain the Lewis structure of the Sulfate ion, SO 4 – 2, we must first enter the charge by typing (-2) or by entering -2 in the charge field and pressing
Video: Structure and Nomenclature of Thiols and Sulfides - JoVE
Sulfides, or thioethers, have the central sulfur atom flanked by two hydrocarbon groups on either side. Accordingly, sulfides can be symmetrical, with two identical groups on both sides, or asymmetrical, with two different groups.
Chemical Formula, Sulphide Types, Properties, Preparation, - BYJU'S
Sulphide, also called sulfide, is sulphur’s inorganic anion. Learn more about sulphide, including its physical and chemical properties, formula, types, structure and chemical reactions on this page.
Ch16 : Sulfides - Faculty of Science
Structure: The sulfide functional group consists of a S atom bonded to two C atoms via s bonds. C-S bonds (approx. 181 pm) are longer than analogous C-O bonds (approx. 141 pm) Reactivity: Sulfides can be oxidised to sulfoxides or, if the oxidant is strong enough to sulfones.
14: Thiols and Sulfides - Chemistry LibreTexts
Sulfoxides have a fixed pyramidal shape (the sulfur non-bonding electron pair occupies one corner of a tetrahedron with sulfur at the center). Consequently, sulfoxides having two different alkyl or aryl substituents are chiral. Enantiomeric sulfoxides are stable and may be isolated.
