With overlapping that tile will cover 45" X 9" = 2.8 sq feet of exposed roof. 7lbs/2.8 sq. ft. = 2.5 lbs/sq. ft. for the SolarRoof tile. So even with underlayment material and plywood, I think you are safe.

We contacted Tesla first about installing the system, and they indicated the installation would be more expensive because they would likely break many tiles and would need to order a palette of extra roof tiles.

AAAaaaargh 10kw system for 55k HKD sounds like a sweet deal and very tempting haha but sorry I'm going to wait this year to see reviews of the Tesla ones in Hong Kong; if they still don't roll out by end of the year then I'll look back into conventional panels.

Aug 26, 2018 · Solar roof was an option when I priced my install out in 2022. It was 100% more expensive than panels. I could not justify the added cost. There is the added benefit of a lifetime roof, but I could install two metal lifetime roofs + panels for the cost of the solar roof.

May 10, 2019 · Has anyone had Tesla panels installed on a (non-flat) red tile roof? On a black flat roof, the tiles somewhat blend into the roof. But for a curved tile roof, the panels will be more visible - with larger gaps underneath the tiles. Pictures of the installation would be helpful...

Dec 9, 2022 · As @Vines pointed out, if the roof, and rafters, weren't flat to begin with, the edges of the tiles are going to be off. If the roof load of the tiles caused movement of the roof plane, you would also have an issue. Finally, I have no idea if Tesla has a manufacturing issue that makes cupped tiles.
