USS Worcester (CL-144) was a light cruiser in the United States Navy. It was the third ship to carry that name, honoring the city of Worcester, Massachusetts. Worcester was the lead ship of the Worcester -class of light cruisers. It was launched just after the close of World War II and decommissioned in 1958.

The USS WORCESTER, CL-144, was formally started as a project by the Bureau of Ships when a request for designs was made by the General Board on May 13, 1942. The design process resulted in ten different design schemes being proposed.

USS WORCESTER was the lead ship of the Navy's last ever built class of light cruisers and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. The WORCESTER decommissioned at Mare Island, Calif., in December 1958, joining the Reserve Fleet there.

Combining destroyer maneuverability with cruiser size and given a main battery that could deal not only with surface targets but with aircraft as well, Worcester embodied many of the lessons learned during World War II. She and her sister ship, Roanoke (CL-145), epitomized the hard-hitting dual-purpose cruiser.
