May 7, 2022 · The Tarantula Nebula is massive, with the spider fang area being around 500 light years in diameter and with the surround nebula it hits a whopping 1,000 light years in diameter. This makes it the largest region of ionized gas in our local galaxy group which includes Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies.

Its luminosity is so great that if it were as close to Earth as the Orion Nebula, the Tarantula Nebula would cast visible shadows.

This is of the tarantula nebula, a massive nebula in another galaxy, the large magellanic cloud, that emits strongly in Ha (red) and OIII(blue/green). If this nebula was as close to earth as orion, it would cast shadows! Onto the more technical data:

The Tarantula nebula has always been a favorite of mine. A huge celestial furnace of star production, located outside our galaxy in the Large Magellanic Cloud, it's a great target for southern skies. This is my largest project to date, with just over 75 hours of integration and pushing the RedCat51 to its limits.
