The monument “The Motherland Calls” is the compositional centre of the monument-ensemble "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad" on Mamayev Kurgan in Volgograd, Russia. The death toll of the Battle of Stalingrad (17 July 1942-2 Feb 1943) was huge, leaving about 850,000 Axis soldiers dead, missing or wounded in the battle, and 1.1 million Soviet soldiers downed, missing or wounded. About 40,000 civilians residing in the city also died during the combat.The city was named Stalingrad after Stalin in 1
